Product information : The irresistible call of Route 66, the classic TV anthology series and the venerable Mother Road herself, is best summed up in a bit of dialogue in the episode, "Welcome to Amity," one of the 15 episodes that concluded Season One contained on this four-disc set. Yet another stranger in distress urges self-proclaimed "searchers and look-arounders" Tod Stiles (Martin Milner) and Buz Murdoch (George Maharis) to help her. "Where are we going?" Tod asks, as she bids them to follow her. "Let’s find out," Buzz replies. Viewers happily followed Tod and Buz for four seasons on their cross-country odyssey in search of roots. Each week brought a new location, a new job, and new personal dramas in which they found themselves involved. In the gripping "An Absence of Tears," they unwittingly help a vengeful blind woman buy the exact brand of gun and bullets that thugs used to kill her husband during a botched gas station robbery. In "Most Vanquished, Most Victorious," they have 24 hours to find the daughter of Tod’s dying aunt. In "The Newborn," they help an expectant Pueblo woman escape the clutches of the wealthy and powerful rancher whose late son impregnated her. No wonder that in the more lighthearted "Eleven the Hard Way," Tod suggests to Buz that they take "a 48 hour furlough from other people’s problems" (no such luck; they no sooner find themselves in Reno helping two men win enough at the crap tables to save their dying town). Compelling stories, a vivid sense of place, and literate scripts were signposts of Route 66. While Tod and Buz "give lumps to some well-deserving people" (a climactic encounter with a street gang in "Most Vanquished, Most Victorious" is a great rumble), the show (and the cast) truly shine in the more emotional and dramatic moments. In "Like a Motherless Child," orphaned Buz bonds with a lonely woman who fronts as a shill. While Tod is the studied one, it is Buz who gets the bulk of the scripts’ great, glorious riffs, as in "The Opponent," when he and Tod visit a once-legendary figure from Buz’s Hell Kitchen neighborhood ("Would you take a detour to see Caesar or Napoleon? Those are the big boys you met in books. I met my own kings, face to face, in the back alleys"). Along for the ride are some great character actors, many in their earliest screen appearances, including Robert Duvall as "a trigger-happy kook" in "The Newborn," Darrin McGavin as a boxer on his last legs in "The Opponent," featuring Ed Asner (with hair!) as his trainer and Al Lewis (Grandpa from The Munsters) as a gym owner, and Walter Matthau at his schlubby best as a disreputable gambler in "Eleven the Hard Way." As in Volume 1 there are no commentaries or interviews, but vintage TV and classic car buffs will cruise through nearly 20 minutes of commercials for Chevrolet and Bayer Asprin. --Donald Liebenson Read More.

Product information : Vintage TV buffs will get their kicks (you saw that one coming) from Route 66, the 1960 nomadic series that brought Beat-inspired wanderlust to primetime. Three years after the publication of Jack Kerouac's On the Road, Yale-educated Tod (Martin Milner) and his scrappy Hell's Kitchen-bred friend, Buzz (George Maharis), set off in search of America in Tod's awesome Corvette convertible, his sole possession following his once-wealthy father's death. Buz ("the kid with the punch") handles most of the scrapes the buddies get into as they take odd jobs and invariably become embroiled in the personal dramas of the people they meet, as in the pilot, when they arrive, unwanted, in a closed-off small town hiding a shameful secret. Route 66 is perhaps best-known today for Nelson Riddle's classic cruising theme song (not the Nat "King" Cole tune), but nearly 50 years later, the series still runs like a top, with a vivid sense of place (the cross-country episodes were filmed on location) and dialogue that goes from cool banter ("Buz." one lunchtime pickup inquires, "is that your name or a high frequency?") to philosophical musings. Sterling Silliphant, who would go on to win an Academy Award for In the Heat of the Night, wrote the bulk of the literate, compelling scripts. The DVD box misleadingly pictures as guest stars Walter Matthau, Robert Redford, and Martin Sheen, who did appear during the series' run, just not in these first 15 episodes. But we do get Lee Marvin as a nasty rancher in "Sheba," Leslie Nielsen as a scientist who takes refuge in Carlsbad Caverns in anticipation of a bomb attack in "A Fury Slinging Flame," and E.G. Marshall as a misguided father in "Three Sides." There is unfortunately no star commentary, but this four-disc set gets some extra mileage from original commercials for Bayer Aspirin and Phillips Milk of Magnesia, and one touting the '61 Chevy Biscayne featuring William "Bub" Frawley and the kids from My Three Sons, and a Chevrolet Corevette photo gallery that should get classic car buffs' engines running. --Donald Liebenson Read More.

Product information : Buckle up for a complete season of one of television’s very best dramatic series. You may be tempted to want to pull an all-nighter and drive straight through all 32 episodes, but it’s best to take frequent rest stops to fully enjoy this trip into the heart of America. Well-heeled Tod Stiles (Martin Milner) and Hell's Kitchen-bred Buz Murdoch (George Maharis) are back on the road, still "looking and moving" to find "a place where we really fit." Until then, as Buz proclaims, "It’s not the getting there that counts, it’s the going." And these cats go. Speedways and turnpikes? They’re nowhere. In Route 66, what usually happens is that Tod and Buz happen upon someone in crisis, like a Jewish boy who loses faith after his father is murdered, a terminally ill woman, and a mysterious woman who steps off a bus wearing a creepy mask. Most of the time, Tod and Buz are in this together, but sometimes, there is tension when only one insists on getting involved. "Can’t you leave one tornado for the weather bureau?" an annoyed Tod asks Buz in "Love is a Skinny Kid," one of the season’s best episodes. Route 66 was one of the best written shows on television (series creator and future Oscar-winner Sterling Silliphant wrote many of the second season scripts). The hipster dialogue keeps the Beat, but it's the compassionate stories that really drive the series. Tod and Buz are audience surrogates who experience America's diverse communities, from New England shipbuilders to a Midwestern Polish family. Route 66 is on the side of authentic craftsmanship, cultural traditions, and mom and pop restaurants where you can get "soup, salad, entrée, fruit cocktail, two vegetables, the whole truth and nothing but the truth" for $1.19. This season gets extra mileage from its premium guest stars, including Ethel Waters in her Emmy-nominated performance as a dying blues singer in "Good Night, Sweet Blues," Robert Redford as a Polish mill worker's college educated son whose homecoming is marred by tragedy in "First Class Mouliak," Robert Duvall as a heroin addict in "Birdcage on My Foot," Lee Marvin as a French chanteuse's violently possessive manager in "Mon Petit Chou," and an unrecognizable Martin Sheen as a psychotic gang member in "And the Cat Jumped Over the Moon" (with James Caan as a former gang member trying to go straight). That's Burt Reynolds in a bit part as a small Texas town hood in "Skinny Kid." Here's hoping they roll out Season Three soon. I can't wait to get on the road again. --Donald Liebenson Read More.

Product information : I saw many of the 1960 and 1961 episodes while in the service. I was so taken by the show that in my mind (confusing reality and television), I decided to hit the road when I got discharged in 1962. I purchased a 1961 Vette and a buddy and I set off from Sacramento, California sometime in May 1963 a la Tod and Buzz to find adventure and romance at every stop. Unfortunately we only got as far as southern Utah when we totally ran out of money. I guess we forgot that Buzz and Tod took time out to work here and there. Anyway, it was fun while it lasted and my only lasting regret was having sold the Corvette. Back to the show: one fascinating aspect is in the scripts. Silliphant in particular was a great writer both serious and comedic - but what is amusing today is the amount of beat-era language, as well as existentialist philosophy. Sterling must have read his Sartre and Camus - or at least Tod did while at Yale. The show had at times a strangely schizophrenic nature: trite, even stupid story lines, but some very profound diologue (at least for television). And the need for at least one fist fight in every episode gives the lie to any myth of a "kinder and gentler nation" before the counter culture invasion in the mid 60's. --(dnegri1@earthlink.net) Read More.
